The Adoration of the Shepherds, a work completed in 1571 by Francesco Mancini, is in the apse of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. This work helps us to contemplate the wonders of that first Christmas night. We can imagine entering the Grotto of Bethlehem, just like the shepherd standing on the left and the young boy who says to his kneeling mother: “Look at the manger, there is a baby!”. You too can offer your poor gifts. Put everything in the basket of the poor peasant woman, who gave Jesus two doves. Adore him with the same devotion!
In the depths of the dark Grotto, a light brightens every corner. Observe the delicacy with which Saint Joseph lifts the veil that covers the mystery of God who became a Child. The little Jesus is held in Mary’s arms. Listen to the song of the Angels who ceaselessly sing the glory of God. Let yourself be interrogated by the welcoming glances of Joseph and Mary: Why don’t you enter the Grotto of Bethlehem? The almighty God made himself small for you, so that you would not be afraid of Him!
Observe the passage of light behind Joseph, a door to Heaven, illuminated by the naked and defenceless body of the Child, who, lying on the manger, emanates his warm light, which envelops and transfigures everything.
How can we not think of the powerful image of the Holy Door that leads us into the Jubilee 2025, which the Holy Father Francis will open on this Christmas night 2024! The Holy Door is the sign of that passage of light, which opened with the of Christ’s Incarnation.
The Lord Jesus is the door of Salvation. He redeemed us from the slavery of sin. He reconciled us with God and with our neighbor. He calls us to entrust ourselves to the Mother Church, which with the sacrament of Penance leads us into communion with the Father and all mankind. Whilst the Eucharist gives us the pledge of eternal Life.
We proclaim with exultation to every man: “Do not be afraid, do not let your hands grow weak! The Lord your God in your midst is a mighty Savior. He will rejoice over you with joy, he will renew you with his love” (Zephaniah 3:16-17).
